The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties  (COP26) in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November 2021. The European Heat Pump Association is organising a roadtrip to showcase the contribution of heat pumps to fighting climate change. EHPA Secretary General, Thomas Nowak will drive from Düsseldorf to Glasgow from 2 to 11 November, visiting heat pump manufacturers and installations, showing that heat pumps are everywhere on the way. From new and renovated buildings to industries and electric vehicles.

Why are heat pumps important to COP26?
With Climate change affecting our everyday lives, we expect the world leaders at COP26 to present ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets and concrete delivery pathways to achieve them. Targets and implementation action must include the heating and cooling sector building on the massive deployment of heat pump solutions. This technology enables the efficient and low carbon electrification of heating and cooling within the next decade. Emissions will continue to decline in line with ever-greener electricity generation. The technology is available for nearly all application areas (residential, commercial, industrial sectors) and is reliable and mature.

successful COP26 will include heating & cooling – based on heat pump solutions – in its concluding statements and will set the scene for national legislation and a market framework that triggers end-user demand and leads to quick deployment of the technology.

Hence, we are going to the COP26 on a road trip from 2 to 11 November, visiting heat pump sites on the way, and showing that heat pumps contribute to a greener planet.

EHPA was invited to repeat its yearly EUSEW activity and offer ice cream to the participants of EUSEW 2018 at the Residence Palace, on June 6th 2018.

The aim of this activity was to raise awareness of the main benefits that can be achieved thanks to heat pumps and will result to:

  • – green House Gas Emission Reductions
  • – energy Efficiency
  • – renewable Energy
  • – local jobs
  • – energy Security
  • – smart Grids

Ice cream postcard 2018

These benefits are colour-coded in each ice cream flavor and participants are invited to use these titles when ordering an ice cream. Heat pumps are not only used to produce heating, they are also used for refrigeration systems, cooling residential applications and even Ice Hotels (Kiruna, Sweden). Despite the numerous advantages of our technology, the level of awareness of the general public remains far too low. So reaching out to more than 300 participants in Brussels sounds like a good – and cool – step in the right direction. Thank you EUSEW for a great week! We are looking forward to next year’s events.

This activity was sponsored by Stiebel Eltron

In November 2017 EHPA signed the “Small is beautiful” Declaration and thus joined the Small is Beautiful campaign.

This campaign is a call for a « de minimis » approach on the framework for small renewables & cogeneration installations.

Download the Small is Beautiful Declaration here

The trade associations representing key players in Europe’s energy transition urge policy makers to take a step-wise approach towards the market integration of small-scale renewable and high efficiency cogeneration installations.

Whilst the European institutions are negotiating the recast of the Electricity Market Design Regulation, the signatories of the declaration launch today the “Small Is Beautiful” campaign, aiming at highlighting the benefits of small-scale, clean and locally owned installations to move progressively towards a decentralised energy system.

These benefits are, however, threatened by the European Parliament’s current proposal requiring all power generators to be “balancing responsible” and the blanket removal of priority dispatch.

Rather than encouraging the participation of consumers or SMEs in the energy transition, the current proposals on the table would act as a disincentive.

Towards a 100% carbon-free heating & cooling sector in Europe by 2050

The European heating & cooling sectors comprise 51% of energy consumption and contribute about 27% of Europe’s overall carbon emissions. Decarbonising this industry will be essential in Europe’s transition towards a carbon emission free society by mid of this century. Yet, the EU is far from being on track.

The heating and cooling industry is conscious of its responsibilities and is therefore launching the DecarbHeat initiative that aims to turn the vision of a 100% carbon-free, efficient, renewable heating & cooling sector in Europe by 2050 into reality. The initiative consists of three elements:

  • an Industry Pledge showing the willingness of the thermal industry to take a leading role in the energy transition,
  • a set of Guiding Policy Principles to underpin policy-action at European, national, regional and local level beyond geographic or institutional specifics
  • and a Declaration of Support.

TheDecarbHeat initiative aims at bringing together the major players of the heating and cooling industry and other major stakeholders. Together they can make the vision of a 100% decarbonised European heating and cooling system reality.

The DecarbHeat Forum 2017 was the kick-off event of the initiative. The aim was to collect ideas from a broad audience on the next steps towards the vision of a 100% decarbonised heating and cooling sector, along four areas of consideration:

  • How do scientists and policy makers envision the 2050 energy system and which solutions exist to address the issue of decarbonising the heating sector?
  • What are the main challenges for cities, in particular when it comes to the renovation of buildings and whole quarters and how should decarbonized energy be distributed here?
  • How will digitalisation challenge the heating and cooling industry – from product design to business models?
  • What are the challenges for industry and how can energy demand in industry be meaningfully

The conference brought together relevant stakeholders:

  • policy makers from the EU Commission and the Parliament as well as from the Member States,
  • high level representatives from the heat pump and thermal industry,
  • decision makers from cities,
  • other users of heat: representatives from industry.

The DecarbHeat Forum 2017 took place in Brussels on 11 and 12 May 2017 at the prestigiousBEL building, a show-case of an eco-friendly passive house building equipped with PV, heat pumps and ventilation.

In October 2017 EHPA decided to respond to the challenges that cities and towns all over Europe are going through. Ahead of local governments stand great changes to provide liveable, healthier and environmentally friendly urban areas. Unfortunately, the progress is slow as potential of some technologies, like heat pumps (HPs), is not exploited fully.

We are pleased to announce that the local governments of Budapest, London, Madrid and Riga responded to our campaign. We are looking forward to further cooperation with those and other cities all over Europe to find the best heat pump solutions!

This is why, EHPA decided to contact European mayors and help them plan(t) the future of their cities now. We reached out to the most progressive local governments all over Europe!

As in our previous campaigns, we have color coded the 6 benefits of heat pumps in a postcard. Together with the postcard, mayors received boxes with 6 tulip bulbs indicating the 6 advantages of HPs:

  • Renewable energy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Clean air
  • Supply security
  • Local jobs
  • Smart Grids

By sending back their Flower Postcards, mayors can now request from EHPA a profiled info-package, meeting with heat pump experts or share their success stories of applied heat pump technology and win the Heat Pump City of the Year Award.

Planning well in advance can make a difference and is not different from planting tulip bulbs.

Next year European cities will not only flourish with flowers but also with heat pumps!

One week before the Winter Package is launched by the European Commission on November 2016, the European renewable energy associations decided to create a series of renEUable stories and start the #RenEUable initiative. The initiative shines a light on one of the EU’s greatest achievements – Europe’s renewable energy industries – by promoting its benefits and best example showcases. Discover every week new stories that show how REnEUable can contribute to several sectors!

Energy Security:

67%: How Denmark & Lithuania fix the gas leak

Kaunas district heating network, a step towards energy security

Kaunas Energy, the second largest heating company in Lithuania, is increasing energy security by shifting to renewable district heating networks. Kaunas Energy, supplies 20% of Lithuanian heat through services to municipalities’ district heating networks displacing Russian gas. The district heating system of Kaunas provides heat to 118,000 people, operating three biomass boilers for a total capacity of 70 MW, corresponding to the use of 218.000 tons of wood chips. The biomass-based boilers of Kaunas Energy are expected to produce 480 GWh of thermal energy per year, thereby avoiding the use of a significant quantity of gas and oil annually. For a country like Lithuania, the close proximity to Russia makes being energy in dependent essential. Bioenergy provides an alternative to Russian gas imports.

Marstal, Denmark: Improving energy security by combining renewables

Solar thermal technologies have already shown they can drastically gas dependency on a large scale.  In Marstal, Denmark, a hybrid project combining solar thermal with other RES technologies is suitable to fully cover a district heating needs and serve 1460 people. In 2014, this project had already replaced the equivalent of 1 200 000 m³ of natural gas , which represents the volume of 48 Olympic-size swimming pools. Similar projects are being built all over Denmark: a great step toward less dependency on our fossil fuel imports.

Marstal, Denmark

In 2014 EHPA decided to reach out to all the MEPs. The aim of our campaign was to show them that it is easy to like heat pumps, as they benefit EU in 6 different aspects:

  • – renewable energy
  • – energy efficiency
  • – GHG emission reduction
  • – supply security
  • – local jobs
  • – smart grids

To make it even easier, we colour-coded those benefits in our postcard.

Because of all the reasons above we were sure that heat-pumping solutions should be at the heart of the Energy Union!

Every MEP received from us a postcard, a pack of candies in 6 colours, “I <3 HP” sticker and mug.

Our campaign received a lot of positive feedback and was a great start of long-lasting collaborations with the EU stakeholders.

Check out our I love HP campaign postcard!
